Myer Emporium Dining Room murals by Napier Waller

Level 6, Myer Emporium, 314-336 Bourke Street, Melbourne

The 1933-34 Dining Room located on the top level of Melbourne's Myer Emporium is a rare surviving example of an Art Deco restaurant, and although it is no longer used for its  intended purpose it remains substantially intact and publicly accessible.

Apart from three gigantic chandeliers and a dramatic moderne double staircase, the chief feature of the ballrom-sized space is the series of ten murals that adorn its walls.

Commissioned by store owner Sidney Myer to depict themes involving women throughout  the ages, the murals are the work of noted Australian artist M. Napier Waller who was also responsible for the mosaic and stained glass decoration of the Australian War Memorial in Canberra and Newspaper House in Melbourne, amongst others.
